Pine River Police Officer Shawn Birr received the Lou Jeska Steward Award from Law Enforcement Labor Services, on Saturday, June 9. Birr was nominated by LELSUnion Representative Doug Bean. LELS represents law enforcement officers from around 211 Minnesota police and sheriff departments.
According to LELS, in 1993, LELS union steward Lou Jeska was killed in a car accident while on duty in the City of Eagan. The LELS Board of Directors instituted an annual award in memory of Lou Jeska and his service and dedication to union issues. The award is presented each year at the annual meeting to a union steward or elected union officer who best exemplifies the traits Lou Jeska displayed including conscientiousness, objectivity, tenacity and honesty.
