Pequot Lakes will advance nine athletes to the Class A state meet at Hamline University. Pictured are the athletes and coaches, front row: Rachel Allen, left, Kendra Johnson, Vanessa Lane and Nicole Traut. Back row: girls' coach Brian Kazmierczak, Jordan Anderson, Tyler Tappe, Tomas Parker, Isaac Allen, Nolan Michaelson, boys' coach Dave Guenther, assistant coach John Derksen.
Pequot Lakes' freshman Vanessa Lane won the 100-meter title and also teamed with Rachel Allen, Kendra Johnson and Nicole Traut to finish first in the 4x100 relay at the Section 6A meet on Thursday, June 2, at Moorhead State University.
The four athletes, who helped the Patriots finish eighth as a team, advance to the Class A state meet on Friday and Saturday, June 10-11, at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Lane, one of the fastest 100-meter performers in the state, won the section title in that event in 13.64 seconds. Sommer Haugrud of Pelican Rapids was second in 13.78.
"Vanessa ran so strong in that wind," Pequot Lakes girls' track coach Brian Kazmierczak said. "Her strength really was to her advantage. I knew it was going to be between her and (Haugrud). Vanessa set the tone in prelims when they faced off right away."
The 4x100 relay stopped the clock in 50.93 seconds to edge runner-up Osakis with 51.01.
"It's always nice to have a sprint relay with an anchor who is the fastest athlete at the meet," Kazmierczak said of Lane. "When we got the baton to Vanessa, for about 50 meters, we could breath easy. The Osakis girl did catch up, but was not able to pass Vanessa. Osakis did advance to state by their time, but to run a sub 51 was a shock. The wind was a real factor for Vanessa, but not really for the other three. Kendra ran such an impressive leg with the wind."
Kazmierczak said his team is excited to advance four athletes to state after not having a qualifier last year.
"For a number of years now, we have gone into the section meet with high expectations, and we have left a little disappointed," he said. "I was really proud of our girls. It's fun to send one kid to state, and it's four times the fun going with a relay."
He added that Pequot Lakes did have "some great performances" from athletes who did not advance. Other top finishers were Lane taking third and Kendra Johnson fourth in the 200; Samantha Allen placing fourth in the pole vault: the 4x200 relay of Carly Hoffman, Abby Palmer, Bailey Fitch and Mattie Lueck finishing sixth; Kendra Johnson placing seventh in the shot put; and Palmer finishing eighth in triple jump.
"Our 4x200 ran a great race," Kazmierczak said. "They were really affected by the wind, but they got to the podium.
"I'm proud that Sam Allen ended her track career with a personal-best vault of eight feet, one inch. And having Abby Palmer make it to the finals was a great accomplishment since she just picked up the triple jump just a few weeks ago."
