The Pequot Lakes boys' golf team played their best round of the season and finished second at the 11-team Deacon's Invitational on Wednesday, May 12, at Deacon's Lodge.

Brainerd won the title with 313, followed by Pequot Lakes 318, Bemidji 322, Staples-Motley 325, Crosby-Ironton 342, Detroit Lakes 345, Wadena-Deer Creek 349, Pine River-Backus 376, Nevis 393, Park Rapids 394, and United North Central 422.

Sean Halverson of Brainerd was medalist with 74 while teammate Michael Foley was second with 77.

The Patriots' Nevin Greer was third with 78, Alex Goerges was fifth with 79, and Levi Espeseth 10th with 80. Other Pequot Lakes scores were Wes Johnson 81, Nolan Michaelson 88 and Ryan Puhle 88.

"It was the best showing of the year for our top four golfers," Pequot Lakes coach Steve Stoxen said. "You need four good scores to move to the next level and a 318 total is very competitive, especially for a team with mainly sophomores."

Stoxen gave credit to the extra short-game practice by his golfers.

"Their time and effort working on their short game is paying off," Stoxen said. "The kids who learn how to score are the ones who have worked on their short game."

The Patriots, who were scheduled to play at Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, May 18, stay on the road to play at St. Cloud Country Club at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20, and at Wadena-Deer Creek at 2 p.m. Monday, May 24.
