Registration is due to the Pequot Lakes Community Education office by Tuesday, June 1. The pre- registration deadline is important to the program planning. The registration fee is $30. Call (218) 568-9200 for more information or to sign up today.
Teachers, police officers, community agency representatives and volunteer teen instructors work in the Safety Kids program each day to develop healthy, safe attitudes in the young children. Through classroom activities, songs and videos the children learn about various aspects of safety.
The Safety Kids practice pedestrian skills and experience real life situations by driving tot sized vehicles in a miniature city layout complete with city blocks, sidewalks, city buildings and stop signs.
There is a family program Friday, June 11, for parents, siblings and grandparents to share in building their safety awareness skills. Joyce Olson, Pequot Lakes School nurse, will provide instruction on first aid and CPR skills at the family program. Following the family program the Safety Kids will have an end of program recognition time and refreshments.
Safety topics include tricycle riding, pedestrian skills for safe walking, fire safety, 911 emergency calls, water safety when swimming or boating, electrical safety and pet or animal safety.
The community resource representatives are from the Pequot Lakes Police Department and the Police Reserve Unit; the Breezy Point Police Department; the Pequot Lakes, Ideal and Crosslake fire departments; the Crow Wing County Sheriff's dispatch office; the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Boat and Water Patrol; Crow Wing Power; and Heartland Animal Rescue Team (HART).
