The Houston wrestling team edged Skyview, Nikiski and Homer for first place at the Homer Rumble in Homer on Saturday.

Houston finished with 105 points, followed by Skyview (100), Nikiski (84) and Homer (75). Seward took seventh. Cordova and Voznesenka also competed.

Skyview’s individual champions were Hannah Hutchison at 106 pounds, Sam Janorschke at 132, Cody Williams at 145 and Frank Navarro at 152.

Nikiski received individual titles from Dakoda Neely at 113, Corey Green at 160 and Lincoln Johnson at 182.

The Skyview and Soldotna volleyball teams picked up victories on Friday in consolation play at the Northern Lights Conference tourney at Colony.

SoHi swept Kenai 3-0 and will play in the third-place semis at 11 a.m. Saturday. Skyview topped Homer 3-1 and will play in the third-place semis at 9 a.m. The Stars and the Panthers need to win two matches Saturday to take third place and earn a berth to state. The season for Homer and Kenai is over.

Too little.

That’s how Kenai Central hockey coach Pete Iverson summed up Friday’s 2-1 loss to Eagle River on Day 2 of the Peninsula Ice Challenge at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Kardinals, who beat North Pole 3-1 on the tournament’s opening night Thursday, fell behind 2-0 before scoring late in the third period to keep it close.

“I was glad to see we kept playing all the way through,” Iverson said. ”But I’m a little disappointed we got ourselves in that situation.”

Jonas Perletti hoped to have a fast start. He turned the wish into reality.

The Soldotna junior scored two goals in the first period, leading the Stars to a 3-0 victory Thursday over Eagle River on the opening night of the Peninsula Ice Challenge at the Soldotna Sports Center.

“I knew if we didn’t get the momentum, it was going to be a tough game,” said Perletti, a forward. “I was trying to come out strong, and I was just really thinking about goals before the game.”
