The Skyview wrestling team defeated host Soldotna 45-30 in dual competition Tuesday.

The Panthers received pins from Grant Valiquette in the 120-pound weight class, as well as Sam Janorschke (132), Bailey Blumentritt (138), Khelbie Miller (145) and John Alexander (heavyweight).

Also earning a victory for Skyview was Alex Rodriguez at 182. Austin Craig (106) and Hannah Hutchison (113) won by forfeit for the Panthers, who will host exhibition duals with SoHi, Seward and Nikiski at 5 p.m. Friday.

The Seward volleyball team closed the Class 3A state tournament with consecutive victories at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla, earning fourth place for the second consecutive season.

Seward dropped its first-round contest Thursday to Dillingham before coming back to beat Eielson in three games on Friday and Petersburg in five on Saturday.

The scores against Eielson were 25-16, 25-19 and 25-20. The tally against Petersburg was 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 23-25 and 15-11.

No central Kenai Peninsula wrestling team finished in the top three at the Peninsula Duals at Nikiski on Friday and Saturday, but a handful of local individuals delivered stellar performances.

While Colony, Dillingham and Kodiak took the podium in that order for the team title, area schools produced six of the 14 athletes who earned Outstanding Wrestler awards.

Kenai Central, Soldotna, Skyview, Nikiski, Homer and Voznesenka were among the 15-team field.

The Soldotna hockey team split a pair of nonconference games in Anchorage on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, Soldotna topped West 5-2 at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Josh Kerkvliet led the Stars with a hat trick.

“We had a lot better effort than we did (Friday),” Soldotna coach Aaron Swanson said. “It showed up on the scoreboard.”

West took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kieran Kuiper, but Cody Harvey, who made 12 saves, kept the slate clean until a late third-period goal by Dawson Ellingworth. Swanson said Harvey provided solid goaltending throughout the game.
