Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen took 18th place in the opening competition of the 2011-12 World Cup Biathlon championships in Sweden on Wednesday.

Hakkinen competed in a 20-kilometer race and shooting event, compiling a result of 57:02.4.

“This race showed there is really good potential for this season, so now I can be quite ambitious about my goals,” he said in a written statement. “Plus, it is always fun to be scoring World Cup points.”

Bourgeois wins Quad Dipsea

Seward’s Cedar Bourgeois was the first woman to cross the finish line at the Quad Dipsea in California on Saturday. The race is 28.4 miles long. It has 9,276 feet of both climb and descent.

Bourgeois finished in 4 hours, 59 minutes, 18 seconds. Anchorage’s Matias Saari was third across the line in 4:12:45.

Nikiski’s Thompson finishes college career

Nikiski graduate Hannah Thompson has finished her volleyball career at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio.

The Kenai Central hockey team split with host Juneau-Douglas on Friday and Saturday in nonleague action.

The Crimson Bears earned a 6-3 win on Friday, while the Kardinals took Saturday’s game 5-2. Kenai Central is 3-4-1 on the season.

Saturday, Kenai Central received two goals from Zack Zulkanycz, while Zack Mese, Jake Eubank and TJ Wagoner each found the back of the net once. Kenai Central coach Pete Iverson said Wagoner, a sophomore, had a particularly good two games.

The Soldotna hockey team defeated host Homer 3-0 Saturday to win the End of the Road Tournament, which also included Delta and Bartlett.

SoHi finished 3-0 in the round-robin event. Bartlett placed second at 2-1, while Homer took third at 1-2. Delta finished 0-3.

Nick Wrobel, Dagen Walton and Jonas Perletti scored for the Stars (6-1-1) in the win over the Mariners, who were outshot 19-8.

SoHi coach Aaron Swanson said his team started slow, but picked up the pace over the final 30 minutes.
