The American Legion Twins open up state-tournament play today against Bartlett at 9 a.m. at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Twins, who come in at 9-11 in the league and 11-21 overall, split a pair of league games against the Golden Bears this season, with each side winning on its home field.

"They've been playing some pretty good baseball the last couple of weeks," said Twins Post manager and team manager Lance Coz of his squad. "The only thing that's different is, naturally, with teenage boys early morning games can be a problem."

Bird Homestead Golf Course hosted the fifth annual Kenai Peninsula Food Bank Tournament sponsored by Stanley Chrysler on July 17 with a full house. The tournament was a great success. There were several people to thank during this great fundraising tournament, several businesses and hole sponsors, several volunteers and all those that participated.

The opening of this column is usually reserved for random banter, but with so many upcoming events there just isn't enough time to deviate from the script. Consequently, in an effort to save both time and space, I won't mention that a night filled with adult beverage consumption, followed by a fishing trip the next morning, is a unique way to lose weight. Painful, that's how I would describe my weekend. Life finally returned to normal on Monday when Bill Engberg and I took some lovingly tolerable ladies to Eagleglen Golf Course in Anchorage for the Pro-Lady Tournament.

Joe Winterburn hit a two-run home run off Tyler Blum in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Anchorage Bucs to a 6-4 Alaska Baseball League win Tuesday over the Peninsula Oilers at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

With the loss, the Oilers drop to 16-8 in the ABL but hold a three-game lead over the Bucs (14-12) for first place. The Mat-Su Miners are in third at 13-13, while the Anchorage Glacier Pilots hold fourth at 13-16. The Athletes in Action Fire are in fifth at 10-17.

The Oilers face the Glacier Pilots at 7 p.m. today at Mulcahy.
