Dyllan Day scored three touchdowns in the first quarter as the Mariners rolled to a 54-14 nonconference victory over the visiting Buccaneers on Saturday.

Day scored on a 82-yard kickoff return, a 56-yard punt return and a 63-yard run and Homer never looked back after that.

The Nikiski football team used a 20-point second quarter to earn a 26-7 Greatland Conference victory over Monroe in the 2011 season opener on a drizzly Friday night at Nikiski.

The Bulldogs, who won the conference title a year ago, used a heavy dose of runs out of the Wing-T offense to wear down the Rams, piling up 314 yards on the ground.

Nikiski had its first touchdown less than a minute into the game, as Stephen Hartley plunged in from six yards out after returning the opening kickoff 74 yards to the Monroe 11.

The Peninsula Oilers advanced to the finals of the National Baseball Congress World Series with an 11-6 victory over the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons on Friday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

The Oilers now must beat the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Foresters twice Saturday to earn Peninsula's fourth national title. The first game starts at 3 p.m. ADT and can be heard on 1140 AM. If the Oilers force the second game with a win, that game will start 30 minutes after the first game concludes.

We had a great week at Bird Homestead Golf Course. The week started off with the first Kenai Peninsula Builders Association "Golfing for Scholarships" tournament. The tournament was a great success.

They teed off at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with 14 teams playing a nine-hole scramble. The proceeds will be used for the KPBA scholarship fund. The first-place team of Pedro McCall, Eddie Sibolboro, Teresa Sibolboro and Beau Forrest came in shooting 9 under. Eddie donated half of the team's winnings back to the scholarship fund.
