The host Seward volleyball team defeated Bethel on Thursday in nonconference action. The scores were 25-15, 25-12 and 25-19.

I hope I don’t disappoint the avid followers of this belligerent column, but I’m going to use this space to thank the people who made the first Kenai Peninsula Open at Birch Ridge Golf Course possible this past weekend.

Events like this can’t survive without sponsorship, and this year a number of local businesses contributed to the tournament’s success. The 2011 KGA Donnie Morgan Championship was a big success.

It was nice to visit with Dick and Shirley Morgan to express appreciation for all they have done for us over the years. We do thank them for everything they have accomplished for all of us. Thanks again for the great cake you provided. We enjoyed it very much. Thanks to Bill Bushnell and Pizza Hut for providing the great pizza on Sunday. Thanks also to Doug Jung and Carrs-Safeway for providing all the goodies for Saturday and Sunday. 

Bryan Anderson, a professional at Moose Run Golf Course, birdied four straight holes on the back nine to take a lead he would not relinquish Sunday in the final day of the two-day Kenai Peninsula Open at Birch Ridge Golf Course.

Anderson finished with a total of 2-under-par 138 to take $1,200 at the inaugural event. Rich Lundahl and Rob Nelson both tied for second at 142 to take $550.
