The Soldotna volleyball team defeated Kodiak on Friday and Saturday at Soldotna.

The Stars notched a Northern Lights Conference victory Friday. The scores were 17-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-23. It was the NLC opener for Soldotna.

Soldotna coach Bruce King wrote in an email that his team was able to get quality swings thanks to good passing and good sets. He said Kodiak was able to come up with quality digs, but that the Stars did a good job of keeping up the pressure.

Kenai Central's Allie Ostrander maintained a steady pace from beginning to end.

The field kept falling farther behind.

Ostrander dominated the girls five-kilometer race at the Skyview Invitational at Tsalteshi Trails behind Skyview High School on Saturday, finishing in 17 minutes, 53 seconds - nearly one minute ahead of runner-up Jenette Northey of Service.

"I didn't want to sprint out too fast," said Ostrander, who is 2-0 this season in varsity races. "I just wanted to keep the same pace all the way through."

The Kenai Central girls and Soldotna boys earned team crowns at the Homer Five Way swim and dive meet Saturday at Homer High School.

Kenai Central earned 128 points on the girls side, edging runner-up Homer (94) and third-place Soldotna (80).

Soldotna earned 145 points on the boys side, topping runner-up Homer (109) and third-place Kenai Central (47).

Skyview and Seward also competed.

Eielson throttled Seward 60-8 on Saturday behind a 26-point first quarter and a 28-point second quarter for a Greatland Conference victory.

The Seahawks' lone score came in the third quarter.

Seward, which drops to 0-3 overall, visits Monroe on Friday. Game time has yet to be announced.
