The Kodiak boys and girls swimming and diving squads earned team trophies Saturday at the Homer Invitational.

The Kodiak boys had 42 points, edging runner-up Soldotna (31). The Kodiak girls finished with 63 points, ahead of second-place Homer (19).

PALMER - Allie Ostrander has spent her freshman season taking the state by storm. But the Kenai ninth-grader hasn't surprised at least one Valley runner.

"She's amazing. She's always pushing to do better," Wasilla sophomore Mariah Burroughs, Ostrander's cousin, said after the 4A girls race of the Palmer Invitational on Saturday.

The host Nikiski football team opened with six consecutive touchdown drives, overpowering Delta 56-0 in Greatland Conference action on homecoming Saturday.

With the win, the second-place Bulldogs improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Delta, which suited 15 players, falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Nikiski built a 36-0 lead through 12 minutes and never looked back, regrouping after a 34-28 loss at Barrow last week.

"It feels great just to get back on track," Nikiski running back Josh Brown said. "We went hard and had a tough mentality."

A Northern Lights Conference matchup with two undefeated teams ended in a barnburner Friday night at Justin Maile Field. SoHi held a 19-0 lead in the third quarter and survived a Homer comeback bid to hold on for a 26-22 victory.

The game was expected to be a knock-down, drag-out fight, and that's exactly what it was.

A total of 13 pass attempts between both sides gave way to the running game, with each team doing what it does best - pounding the football and eating up the clock.

"It was as advertised, and then some," SoHi coach Galen Brantley Jr. said.
