When Homer football visits Skyview at 6 p.m. today in Northern Lights Conference action, one side will look to bolster its playoff positioning. The other will simply try to salvage a season gone awry.

The Mariners (4-1 overall, 1-1 NLC) need a win to grab sole possession of the conference's third and final playoff spot with two games remaining.

The Panthers (2-3, 0-3) need a win to extinguish the growing likelihood that they will finish the campaign without a victory in the NLC - a year after going 6-2 overall and qualifying for the postseason.

Homer grad McWilliams notches 6 tackles

Homer graduate Noah McWilliams had six tackles Saturday in Carroll College's 41-33 loss to Eastern Oregon University in Helena, Mont.

McWilliams, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior, has 57 tackles in 15 games with Carroll, the defending champions of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

McWilliams is one of three Alaska natives on the squad. The others are junior offensive lineman Mike Bruce of Ketchikan and freshman defensive tackle Dalton Riggs of Anchorage.

As golfing season winds down, don't forget two of the most fun, important tournaments of the year are still left to play. The first is the Peninsula Senior Tournament.

It will be Friday and Saturday and include 18 holes of competitive play per day. It will be scratch play, flighted by age and handicap. Men's flights are for ages 50 to 64, and 65 and over. Women's flights are for 50 to 59, and 60 and older.

The Nikiski volleyball team reeled off three straight sets after losing the opener to earn a nonconference victory Tuesday over host Kenai Central. The scores were 24-26, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-10.

Minna Bogard paced the Bulldogs with 14 digs, while teammate Cydney Spurgeon added three kills.

Nikiski coach Amber Olivia-Douglas said her squad's role players keyed the win.

"When we had players who were struggling, we had a bench that we were confident in," Olivia-Douglas said. "I was really proud of our bench tonight. They were a key support in what was happening."
