Alex Frere netted a hat trick as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Alexandria (Minn.) Blizzard 5-1 at the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament in Blaine, Minn., on Friday.

The Brown Bears improve to 4-1 overall, the best start in club history, while Alexandria drops to 0-2-1. Kenai River also is 3-0 at the Showcase.

The Brown Bears wrap up play at the tournament today at 6:45 a.m. ADT against Janesville (Wis.) Jets, a team which is also 3-0 at the tourney.

The Kenai River Brown Bears ended the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament with a 4-2 loss to the Janesville (Wis.) Jets on Saturday in Blaine, Minn.

The Brown Bears finish the tournament with a 3-1 record and are now 4-2 overall. Janeville is 4-0 at the tourney and 4-0 overall.

"We had a great showing," Kenai River coach Oliver David said. "There was lots of college interest for our guys. There's a good feel, a good buzz, about the team. There's also a good feel in the locker room."

The Kenai Central girls and boys swept the team titles Saturday at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Cross-Country Meet in Homer.

The Kenai girls were dominant in scoring 20 points. Soldotna was second with 48 points, while Homer was third at 54 points.

Kenai put all five of its scoring runners in the top seven.

Kardinals freshman Allie Ostrander remained undefeated in her career by running 19 minutes, 3 seconds, on the five-kilometer course. Kenai's Bailey Beeson was second at 20:37.

The host Kenai Central football team stayed perfect in the Northern Lights Conference with a blowout win over Houston on homecoming Saturday.

But it sure didn't feel like it - even though the scoreboard read 38-3.

"It was a sloppy performance. With the capabilities of this team, it should never look like that," Kenai Central coach John Marquez said. "It's not about how many points we put up, it's the fact that we didn't look like we knew what we were doing offensively or defensively at times."
