Zac Lazzaro gained possession in the neutral zone, darted down the left wing and zipped the puck toward the net, using a defender to shield the shot.

"All week long, we talked about getting pucks on net, pucks on net," said Lazzaro, a rookie. "We kept working and it worked out for us in the end."

Lazzaro's goal in overtime propelled the Kenai River Brown Bears to a 5-4 win over the previously undefeated Fresno (Calif.) Monsters before 986 fans Friday night at the Soldotna Sports Center.

In a rematch of the Northern Lights Conference regular-season finale, SoHi looks to win its 20th straight on the heels of a 50-20 victory over its rival.

The Stars (8-0 overall, 5-0 conference) are the NLC No. 1 seed, while the Kardinals (4-4, 3-2) are No. 3. The winner gets either Homer or Thunder Mountain in the medium-schools state championship, which will be played Oct. 15 at Chugiak High School.

Central Emergency Services and Peninsula Fire Explorers Post 999 will host the sixth annual NHL/Aces and USA Olympian Alumni Charity Hockey Game at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

Tickets will be available at the gate and cost $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and under.

Teams captains are Steve MacSwain, formerly of the Alaska Aces, and Kerry Weiland, a former Olympian.

Money raised will go toward firefighting training for area youth as well as training equipment.

The Skyview volleyball squad swept host Homer 25-14, 25-13 and 25-23 in Northern Lights Conference play Tuesday.

Marlee Cunningham paced the Panthers (7-2 overall, 3-1 NLC) with nine kills and five blocks. Coach Sheila Kupferschmid said Cunningham hit the ball with accuracy all evening.

"She continues to improve. The more she plays, the better she gets. That's something you want to see in a player," Kupferschmid said. "You don't want to see players plateau, and she's not, She's improving."
