The Alaska Football Coaches Association announced the small- and medium-schools all-state teams Sunday.

AJ Hull, who led Kenai Central to the medium-schools First National Bowl, was named the offensive player of the year. Hull was joined as a Kenai major award winner by Jim Dawson, who was named assistant coach of the year.

Auston Tennis, who led the Stars to an undefeated regular season and Northern Lights Conference title, was named the defensive player of the year.

Nikiski’s path to the small-schools First National Bowl crown got clearer due to reclassification before the 2011-12 prep season.

That same reclassification has made the Bulldogs’ path to a Class 1-2-3A state wrestling title more cluttered.

The football reclassification moved schools like Kenai Central, Soldotna, Homer and Skyview from small-schools to medium-schools football. The Bulldogs took advantage by taking their first small-schools football title since 2001.

The Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the host Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild 3-2 on Friday in a shootout in North American Hockey League play.

The Brown Bears won the shootout 3-1 to improve to 8-4-0 and tie the Fresno (Calif.) Monsters for second place in the West Division. Wenatchee falls to 4-4-1. Fairbanks is on top of the division at 9-1-5.

Dating back to last year, Kenai River has now won three of its last four at Wenatchee, which is a tough place to play. Friday, the Wild drew 2,370 fans.

The Greatland Conference announced its all-conference selections Tuesday.

Nikiski, which shared the conference title with Barrow before going on to defeat the Whalers in the small-schools First National Bowl, had three of the four major honors.

Lincoln Johnson was named the lineman of the year. Johnson also made the first team as a tackle, long snapper and defensive lineman.

Josh Brown was named the offensive player of the year. Brown was on the first team as a fullback.
