The Soldotna volleyball team is headed to the playoffs on a positive note.
Four days after their chances were dashed for a No. 1 seed to the postseason in a loss to Skyview, the Stars swept host Kenai Central 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18 in the regular-season finale Saturday.
SoHi moves to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the Northern Lights Conference Southern Division. Kenai Central is winless in the conference.
With the NLC tournament beginning Thursday at Colony, SoHi coach Bruce King knows what his squad must do well if it hopes to advance.

That’s what Nikiski volleyball coach Amber Oliva-Douglas begged of her squad as it earned a two-game Southcentral Conference sweep of visiting Cordova on Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs struggled to a 21-25, 25-15, 25-16, 17-25, 15-9 victory Friday on a night they failed to communicate. Saturday, the squad won 25-18, 25-16, 24-26 and 25-14.
Oliva-Douglas said the team was on the same page for the most part Saturday, but there were still breakdowns.

Soldotna graduate Blaine Carver registered his first assist of the season Thursday, leading the Seattle University soccer team to a 5-0 victory over the University of Mary.

Carver has two goals on the year and five points overall. The former SoHi standout, in his sophomore year at Seattle, has 10 goals for his career. He scored eight times in 2010 and was named the freshman of the year in his conference.

On the brink of losing to a crosstown rival, Skyview volleyball coach Sheila Kupferschmid pulled her squad aside and shared a message.

“Look guys, it is one set. Don’t look at the big picture. It’s one set at a time. If you can get into the fifth set, anything goes,” Kupferschmid said between Games 3 and 4 of a Northern Lights Conference match Tuesday against Soldotna.
