Summer might be close to over, but the bite is still on for a pair of coveted species on the central Kenai Peninsula.

Silver salmon and rainbow trout are being caught in good numbers on the Kenai River, and the action figures to remain strong through September and into October.

Although it doesn’t keep counts for incoming silvers or resident rainbows on the Kenai, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported this week decent fishing for both species.

A strong, late run of sockeye salmon had Kenai River anglers seeing red in July.

Now they are seeing silver.

The silver salmon run is picking up on the Kenai after a sluggish beginning, guides and biologists say.

“We had our limit in a little more than an hour,” Cody Dutcher, a guide with Widespread Fishing, said of the action Wednesday morning at The Pillars. “It was really just a matter of getting your line in the water.”

They clog our intersections with Hertz rental cars when we're late for work. They plug grocery lines when all granny needs is a gallon of Lucerne. And they march to the boat launch clad in XTRATUF boots - sans mud and salmon guts, as if they scribed the "Great Book of Alaska Faux Pas.'"

But most tourists - the same ones who give the local economy a shot in the rump each summer - come to the central Kenai Peninsula with good intentions.

The way some people cook fish, it’s no wonder some people won’t eat fish.

How fish is thawed makes a difference in how it will taste. By the time the inside is thawed at room temperature, bacteria are building condos on the outside. Fish should be thawed in a refrigerator or in ice water. Fish in a sealed plastic bag will thaw more quickly in ice water than in a refrigerator.
