Just in the last week as a passenger in our car, I have seen two different people in two different areas texting while driving. I truly believe usage of cell phones might have been a factor in some of the horrible accidents that have claimed lives.

People, please pull over to answer your phone or check a text. It only takes a few minutes and it just might save a life or two. The people I saw texting were an older woman and a teenage boy. Their vehicles were not staying in the proper lane.

The board, staff and children of the 6 Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula want to offer a heartfelt “thanks” to the Kenai River Professional Guide Association and event sponsors for donating a day to “Take Our Kids Fishing” for the fifth year. On Aug. 17, approximately 80 local Boys and Girls Club Kids enjoyed sunshine and a great day on the river fishing for Kenai River silver salmon.

Marie McCarty wants to know “Why?”

Why, after nearly two years of work raising money and improving the Calvin and Coyle Trail, complete with a new route, boardwalk and signage, why would anyone vandalize the new signs designed to interpret the forest after the spruce bark beetle infestation?

Why would anyone destroy what so many people worked so hard to do for the entire community’s benefit?

Why would anyone find pleasure in tearing down what others labored to build up?

Why, indeed?

I would like to thank the people who helped me Monday July 25 when my wheel fell off of my car at the corner of K-Beach and the Sterling Highway at Mile 110 Kasilof.

Thank you to the young man who appeared out of no where to pick up my wheel and move it out of the way and to ask me repeatedly if I was okay and to turn my flashers on.

Thanks to the truck driver and all those who were behind him for your patience while I picked up my lug nuts.

Thank you to the trooper who stopped to make sure that I was okay even tho you were on your way to a fatal accident in Ninilchik.
