Reducing fatalities of the Sterling Highway and Seward Highway — I’ve been driving these roads since the Seward Highway opened from the Anchorage side in the early 1950s. These roads are not dangerous!
From the time that they were all gravel until they were paved, drivers have refused/neglected to use common sense while behind a steering wheel. I’ve been run off the roads when they were gravel and since they have been paved. As the roads have been improved, drivers have gotten worse.
Drivers have already been educated, most do not use the education, the highway belongs to them attitude prevails every day. And I’m in their way regardless of the speed posted: 55 mph or 65 mph. When I’m driving the posted limit, drivers pass me on solid yellow lines, curves, and then they are “gone”!
Most drivers become “bullies,” arrogant, aggressive and impatient individuals when they get behind the wheel! I do not know how many times I’ve had to take evasive action because a driver from the opposing lane of traffic was passing a line of traffic. And then there are those that want to “push” the vehicle ahead of them to go faster.
As for more enforcement on the highway, the “troopers” are already spread thin!
The answer — common sense driving? HA!

Agreed James....it's inbelievable the self centered idiots on the road. I am also so sick of the road jerks that ignore the speed limits as if they don't apply to them, nor any other law.
I poll friends who I know are in the road warrior attitude why they speed and take risks when there are posted signs, and they undoubtedly say that they don't care and that I'm the idiot who holds up traffic.
What can we do? I don't know...one thing is the Seward Hwy by Indian to Girdwood should be made a divided Hwy even if there are the concrete temporaries placed until the funds can be allocated for the massive construction it would take.
Stiffen the punishment even though I hate it when, because of the "sins" of the few, the majority must suffer: the double fines aren't working. If caught excessively speeding or reckless driving - take away their liscense one year, past that, jail...yadayadayada.
