There have been a lot of stories of late about the size of halibut and taking large halibut does not harm the breeding stock. If this is true, why did the Pacific Halibut Commission limit the size as well as the quota per day per for fisherman in Southeast?
The Southeast charter fishing for halibut is a vanity fishery at best, anyone who fishes for this fish knows that after 60-80 pounds the quality of the meat deminishes relative to the number of pictures taken and lies told to their buddies back in America.
If the size does not matter then restricting the size can not make sense, but conversly mining the tourist and bloating their egos also makes no sense.
People that fish in state waters for hire or for profit need to be residents and I don’t mean the ones like the oil patch claim by setting up an appartment at a transport hub like Anchorage with lease holders being shift workers on opposing shifts with mail delivery systems to prove residency.
They should actually be Alaskans.

Why did the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council put in place a size and harvest restriction for halibut on guided charters in Southeast Alaska - to keep the harvested biomass within a prescribed Guideline Harvest Level for that sector.
The reduction in the available Halibut biomass has to do with an overall slowing in growth of halibut in the Gulf of Alaska, not a reduction in the numbers of halibut.
Same numbers of halibut, but their growth is a lot slower per year contrasted with past decades. Hence less available biomass to harvest each year by both commercial harvesters, subsistence and sport users.

And then rename it from the Pacific Halibut Commission to the Alaska Halibut Commission.
Stop the commercial fishing in Cook Inlet
We need to stop all of the commercial fishing in Cook Inlet (halibut and salmon). This includes Set Nets. Commercial fishing is destroying the fishing in the inlet not charters or sport fisherman. The allocations are completely one sided in favor of the commercial fishing industry. There is much more money made per fish for in the charter industry. If you want to save the fish in the inlet, stop the comercial fishing or at least cut the commercial quota in half.
Plus, the commercial fishing crews and charter skippers should be Alaska residents.
