It’s become cliché — a phrase for inspirational posters — but only because it rings true: “Team” is an acronym for “Together, Everyone Achieves More.” Phrased another way, perhaps from another inspirational poster, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
We can point to numerous examples of this around our community. Just in the past week, the Clarion reported on two examples of teamwork and collaboration.
We learned about a project initiated by David Justice, a special education resource teacher at Soldotna High School. Justice learned that the best part of the care packages he was sending to his sister-in-law, Maj. Patricia Justice, during her deployment to Afghanistan, was the magazines. Justice approached SoHi Principal Todd Syverson with the idea of sending a few more boxes of magazines, and from there, the idea gained momentum, with more and more schools signing on. Now, thanks to the contributions of many, many more soldiers will have their day brightened with some glossy pages from home.
We also heard from representatives from Kenai Peninsula College, Alaska Christian College and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and the Soldotna City Council, who got together to combine efforts to get a lighted walkway constructed along Poppy Lane, which provides access to KPC, ACC and Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School. Such a project would benefit students at all three institutions, as well as the rest of the community. The pitch now goes to the Legislature for funding considerations, and we can’t help but think that the collaboration between the various entities will boost its chances of approval.
There are many more examples of collaboration between individuals, organizations and agencies throughout our community. Indeed, while going it alone can yield positive results, it’s the group efforts that make the greatest impact. We’re glad to live in a place where the idea of community — working together for a common goal — is valued. It’s part of what makes our community a special place to live. We’re thrilled with what past collaborative efforts have accomplished, and we look forward to working together for even better things in the future.
And while it may seem cliché, it’s true. Working together, we really can accomplish more.
