The Crosby-Ironton Rangers, ranked third in Class AA, used nine three-point baskets to defeat the Pequot Lakes Patriots 70-48 in Mid-State Conference action on Friday, Feb. 14.
It was the 10th straight win for C-I, which improved to 7-1 in the conference and 19-3 overall. The Patriots dropped to 2-6 in the conference and 9-13 overall. Pequot Lakes, which was scheduled to play Perham on Tuesday, Feb. 18, will play at Staples-Motley on Thursday, Feb. 20.
The upset-minded Patriots did lead for most of the first 14 minutes. They got off to an 8-7 lead in the first four minutes as Travis Jacobson scored all eight points. The hosts later led 20-16 after Jack Kreitz stole the ball for a layup. Kreitz made two free throws to give Pequot Lakes a 22-21 advantage, but that would be the Patriots’ last lead.
“We didn’t want to get into a shooting match with (C-I),” Patriots’ coach Ben Starns said, “but we did lead most of the first half before they hit three 3-pointers in a row for a 30-22 lead.”
The Rangers eventually pulled ahead on three 3-pointers for a 34-24 lead. Pequot Lakes stayed within striking distance early in the second half at 42-34 on a pair of 3-pointers by Hunter Larson. But Will Goodwin and Brady Tesdahl answered with 3-pointers and the game was never close again.
Goodwin and Daniel Hudrlik each had three 3-point baskets and also netted 18 points to lead the Rangers. Leading the Patriots were Larson with 18 points and Jack Kreitz with 10.
It was Senior Night for seniors Jacobson, Tyler Tappe, John Craig, Keegan Johnson, Brett Peterson and student manger Mitchell Sergent.
