The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Roseau 51-48 on Friday, Feb. 7, as Brondon Hehir had 13 points, Josh Buell 10, Lucas Mumm and Cody Huss six each, Jackson Goerges and Eric Elverum four each, Hunter Goerges three, and Gage Westlund and Connor Dale two each.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, Crookston defeated the Patriots 52-45 as Hehir had 13 points, Westlund 12, Buell nine, Elverum six and Goerges five.
“We had one of our better halves at Roseau, but we didn’t do as well in the second half,” said junior varsity coach Alex Kunesh, who added that Dale made a couple late free throws to seal the win.
Patriots’ C-team splits
The Pequot Lakes’ C-team boys defeated Roseau 57-10 on Feb. 7, after leading 27-4 at the half.
Hunter Clement led the Patriots with 11 points, followed by Mike Pluimer and Ben Nelson with eight, Kirk Johnson five, Casey Welch four, Jonathan Rabe three, and Noah Borleis, Andy Voges and Anthony Poepenn two each.
Against Crookston, Pequot Lakes was defeated 59-40 after trailing 32-26. Nelson finished with nine points, followed by Pluimer and Johnson each with six, Voges five, Sandelin, Welsh and Clement all with four, and Poepenn two.
“We had too many turnovers against Crookston, but Andy (Voges) did have a good game rebounding.” said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent, whose team is 12-6 overall.
Junior high unbeaten
The Pequot Lakes seventh- and eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams are both 12-0 this season.
The seventh-graders defeated Brainerd 53-16 on Jan. 23 as Tyler Manley and Jordan Schommer each had 12 points and Austin Meister had 11. Owen Seidl, Sean Ryan, Ram Pfeiffer and Aaron Washburn combined for 18 points. The Patriots’ B-team defeated Brainerd 55-12. The leading scorer was Washburn with 16 and Ryan with 15.
The seventh-grade stopped Pine River-Backus 53-17 on Jan. 30. Seidl had 13 points, Meister and Dylin Ackerman each had eight, Pfieffer, Manley and Schommer all had four. The seventh-grade played PR-B again on Feb. 3 as Manley had 12 points and Meister, Washburn and Schommer each had seven.
The eighth-graders beat Brainerd 59-20 as Zach Sjoblad had 15 points, Chase Larson 12, Nathan Traut eight, Austin Young seven and Zach Senst six. The Pequot Lakes’ White also won 39-31 as Henry Harguth had 10, Adam Cassanova and Sam Scheuss each had seven, Deven Psyck six, and Griffen Nelson and Collin Stattleman each with five.
Against PR-B, the eighth graders jumped to a 23-1 lead and eventually won 60-20. Blake Lane led the Patriots with 11 points, Scheuss added 10, Senst and Traut had nine, Sjoblad eight and Chase Larson six.
Against the Tigers on Feb. 3, the Patriots won 63-37. Casanova had 16 points, Senst had 12, Lane, Traut and Larson each had six, and Sjoblad, Young and White each had four.
