PL 16U wins Classic

The Pequot Lakes' 16U volleyball team placed first in the age 17-18 bracket in the Heartland Mid-Winter Classic on Sunday, Feb. 2. Team members include: front row from left:  Josie Florell, Emma Pitzl, Amanda Nies and Caitlyn Carkhuff. Back row: Coach Jenna Crawford, Samantha Littman, Morgan Lohmiller, Corina Ruud, Barbara Miller and Laura Squires. Pequot Lakes finished second in pool play and advanced to the gold division. In pool play, Pequot Lakes defeated Carlton 20-18, 15-20; beat Heartland Mille Lacs Black 20-11, 20-12; topped Princeton 17-1, 20-10, 20-16; but lost to Northern Express 17's by scores of 20-7, 13-20. In tournament play, Pequot Lakes beat Vikings 18 of North Branch 25-19, 25-12; and downed Club Superior 17 in the championship 25-13, 25-23. "We were a little nervous having to play up an age level, but our girls rose to the occasion and were able to compete at that level and came home with a great big win," Crawford said.
