The Pine River-Backus girls’ basketball team’s three-game winning streak ended with a 47-40 loss to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the Northwoods Conference action on Friday, Jan. 17.
It was the second loss this season against the Wolves, who improved to 6-0 in the conference while the Tigers fall to 4-2.
The Tigers, 7-5 overall, was scheduled to host Cass Lake-Bena on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and then play at Laporte on Thursday Jan. 23.
Megan Felthous scored 17 points to lead for the Tigers.
“The first half was really ugly for both teams,” said PR-B coach Randy Schwegel. “There were so many calls that it was tough to watch because there was no flow to the game.
“In the second half we didn’t do a good of guarding Maxine Smith, who had two points in the first half, but finished with 19. Missed shots hurt us, we had one where we missed a layup and (W-H-A) got the rebound and made a 3-pointer.”
The Tigers shot just 31 percent from the field and 39 percent in free throws while WHA shot 46 percent from the field and 63 percent in free throws. The Tigers were also outrebounded 33-24.
The PR-B junior varsity lost to W-H-A 30-20 despite 12 points from Annie Semmler. Taylor Kaczkowski added three, Baily Wynn and Kylie Gaetz two each, and Miah Hansen had one.
