The Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team trailed 3-1 after two periods, but rallied with five goals in a span of 10:28 in the third period to defeat the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels in non-conference action on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Moose Lake.
“We beat them 6-0 earlier this year at home,” Northern Lakes coach Craig Larson said of the Rebels. “I think our guys took the game for granted, and took the first period off as Moose Lake scored in the first 40 seconds. We need to be the team that scores the first goal.”
Jared Sewall tied the game 1-1 for the Lightning early in the second period, but the Rebels answered with a pair of goals for a 3-1 lead going into the third session.
“I changed goalies after the third goal, mainly because we weren’t playing tight defense and that’s not fair to the goalie,” Larson said. “I also changed our forward lines, and that chemistry started to heat up in the third period. We started taking the puck to the net.”
Northern Lakes came to life as Nick Reed, assisted by Josh Maucieri and Austin Mesenbrink, scored at 1:03 of the final period. Jake Hyytinen then tied it 3-3 with an unassisted goal at the 6:00 mark, and then Nick Olson netted the lead goal 27 just seconds later. Nick Blanchette added the next two goals, both assisted by Hyytinen, to give the Lightning a 6-3 lead.
Northern Lakes’ starting goaltender Jager Reed had 10 saves before being replaced by Mitch Stangl, who had nine saves to earn the victory. Losing netminder Gage Mohelsky had 31 saves.
Northern Lakes, 8-5 overall, is scheduled to play a Mid-State Conference game at Park Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 16.
