The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew remained unbeaten by sweeping Staples-Motley 51-9 and Park Rapids 66-7 in a pair of Mid-State Conference wrestling matches on Friday, Jan. 3.

Anthony Philipson (113 pounds), Spencer Richards (120), Brandon Mager (126), Justin Mackenthun (195) and Jared Adkins (285) all won two matches for the Road Crew, who improve to 3-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall.

Against S-M, the Road Crew’s Darion Anderson lost the opening match 5-0. Philipson won by forfeit, and then Richards had two takedowns before winning by fall at 3:53. Mager then won 5-2 over Alex Erpelding.

“Brandon (Mager) wrestled a good match against a quality wrestler,” said head coach Travis Hoffarth.

Evan Gravdahl had a reversal at 132, but lost 6-2 and Dallin Sonenstahl dominated for a 5-1 lead after the first period and then registered a quick takedown and a pin at 2:39. Devyn Richards won by forfeit and both teams forfeited at 152. Jonah Lelwica then had a quick takedown and pin at 1:01. Ozzy Miller had three takedowns before he got his pin at 182 pounds with one second remaining in the first period. After Mackenthun won by forfeit, Cadel Roeder lost 10-4 and Jared Adkins won with a pin at 49 seconds.

Against Park Rapids, the Road Crew won the first two matches by forfeit before Richards was taken down at the start of the third period, but it was too late for his opponent who lost 10-4. Mager and Sonenstahl both won with forfeits. Evan Gravdahl had an exciting match as he trailed 9-3 after two periods before eventually losing in overtime.

“Evan came back very strong,” said Hoffarth of Gravdahl. “It went back-and-forth with Evan taking the lead at one time.”

Devyn Richards lost 11-0 before Nick Gravdahl had a close match against Justin Dravis.

“Nick had defeated Dravis at the recent Big Bear (tournament) in a close contest so we knew it was going to be close,” Hoffarth said. “Nick did not panic when he got behind. (Gravdahl) was placed down at the beginning of the third period, got a reversal and rode out (Dravis) for most of the third period to win.”

Joe Harrison scored eight points in the second period before earning a third-period pin. Ozzy Miller got a pin at 3:08. After a close first period in the 195 match, Justin Mackenthun got a reversal and three near-fall points before he was reversed. Mackenthun countered with a reversal and then got his pin at 3:39.

Roeder then had a takedown and near-fall points before he won with a pin at 1:52, and then Jared Adkins won by fall at 3:08 in the final match.

“Cadel (Roeder) must get tired of me saying that he is improving, but he is,” Hoffarth said.

The Road Crew are scheduled to wrestle at Osakis on Friday, Jan. 10.
