Patriots fall to Esko

Posted: January 7, 2014 - 5:15pm

The Pequot Lakes Patriots girls’ basketball team led by eight points early in the second half before the Esko Eskimos rallied for a 72-67 non-conference victory on Saturday, Jan. 4.

“We just didn’t play well,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “It was evenly matched, but then Haley (Wiebolt) and Kayla (Miller) fouled out. That was the difference because we had trouble stopping their point guard, and containing their spread offense.”

That point guard was freshman Ava Gronsorowski, who finished with 21 points. Another Esko freshman, Judy Wagemaker, added 14 points.

“Esko is one of the better teams in Section 7AA, and they only have one loss (against Mountain Iron-Buhl),” Dale said of the Eskomos, who have won seven straight games, “but it was close. It was a one point game with about a minute left. We then threw the ball away on an inbounds pass in the final seconds when we were down by three.”

The Patriots, who led 34-31 at intermission, were led in scoring by Vanessa Lane with 19 points, Katie White with 15 points and Kayla Miller with 14.

Pequot Lakes, 6-4 overall, was scheduled to play Staples-Motley on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and then host Crosby-Ironton on Friday, Jan. 10.
