The Pequot Lakes’ Red and White eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams opened its season against Pierz on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
The Pequot Lakes Red team opened with a 14-0 lead because of aggressive defensive pressure, and eventually beat Pierz 63-33. Top scorers were Chase Larson with 14 points and Zach Sjoblad with 12. Other scoring were Adam Casanova with nine, Blake Lane with six, Nathan Traut and Austin Young with four each, Sam Scheuss with two and Henry Harguth with one.
The White team beat Pierz 14-10 after building an early eight-point lead. Points were by Jack White with four, and Casonova, Schuess, Kade Kitzman and Traut with two each.
On Friday, Dec. 6, the eighth-grade Red team defeated visiting Wadena-Deer Creek 57-25. Pequot Lakes, which led 15-2 early, frustrated the Wolverines with a man-to-press defense. Zach Senst finished with 15 points, Casanova added 11, Sjoblad 10, Lane, Larson and White with four each, Harguth three, Austin Young two and Kitzman one.
Also on Dec. 3, the Pequot Lakes seventh-grade team jumped to a 15-2 lead against Pierz on way to a 57-16 season-opening victory. Austin Meister had 14 points while Sam Pfeiffer and Jordan Schommers each had 12 points to lead the Patriots.
Owen Siedl, Alex Trees and Dylin Ackerman combined for 14 points while Aaron Washburn had three and James Brennan two. The Pequot Lakes’ White team lost 16-8 as Washburn scored all eight points.
On Dec. 6, the seventh-graders jumped to a 19-0 lead and defeated the W-DC 57-12. Ackerman and Schommer each had 12 points and Meister eight. Sean Ryan and Trees combined for 12 points while Seidl, Tyler Manley and Washburn each had four points.
