The Pequot Lakes Patriots junior varsity and freshmen boys’ basketball teams both lost to Detroit Lakes on Friday, Dec. 13.
The junior varsity trailed 32-12 at the half before losing 53-19. The Patriots were outmatched by an athletic Laker team with a skill for shooting 3-pointers.
The top scorers for the Patriots were Lucas Mumm with five points, Gage Westlund and Hunter Goerges with four, and Eric Elverum with three.
The freshmen led 26-25 at intermission before losing 48-47 against Detroit Lakes.
“The guys played well, except for five minutes in the second half when they scored 13 straight points after we had led by seven,” said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent. “We played well down the stretch, with a lot of heart and balance. It was a close finish with Mike Plummer hitting a 3-point shot at the buzzer.”
Andy Voges led Pequot Lakes with eight points while Jack Keiffer and Casey Welch each had seven, Hunter Clement and Plummer each had six, Kirk Johnson five, Erik Sandelin four and Ben Nelson and Anthony Popenn each had two.
Patriots’ girls win JV games
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team opened the season with wins over Pierz 44-39 on Tuesday, Dec. 10, Park Rapids 68-39 on Thursday, Dec. 12, and Deer River 49-25 on Monday, Dec. 15.
Against Deer River, Jessica Faacks led the Patriots with 13 points while teammates Sam Littman, Corina Ruud and Caitlyn Carkhuff each had eight points.
Against Pierz, the Patriots assumed a 19-7 lead and later lead 27-11 at the half. Pierz did narrow the gap late in the game and eventually lost by five points.
Faacks poured in 22 points to lead Pequot Lakes while Barb Miller added seven and Ruud six. Alyssa Gall led the Pioneers with 11 points.
“We let them get back into it in the second half when I was trying to get everyone in the game,” said Coach Kate Dale. “The girls did play well.”
The Pequot Lakes’ C-team defeated Pierz 34-19 after leading 16-6 at the half. Ruud led the Patriots with eight points, Elsa Headlee and Kayla Geike each had six, Quinn Kratochvil, Chloe Bermel and Lyndsey Johnson each had four, and Molly Dotty chipped in two.
Against Park Rapids, the junior varsity won by building a 34-16 lead at the half behind 3-pointers by Morgan Lohmiller and Barb Miller. The Patriots dominated the second half with Faacks getting nine points and Carkhuff making a 3-pointer. Pequot Lakes also made 11 of 14 (79 percent) of their free throws.
Faacks led the way with 17 points while Miller had 13, Carkhuff nine, Ruud eight, Lohmiller seven, Geike six, Sam Littman four and Dotty and Johnson each with two.
