The Pequot Lakes junior varsity and freshmen boys’ basketball team both won games from the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in Pequot on Friday, Dec. 6.
The junior varsity won 45-24 after leading by 22-12 at halftime. The Patriots got off to a 4-0 start on baskets by Josh Buell and Hunter Goerges and would never trail.
Pequot Lakes showed off its 3-point artistry with Jackson Goerges drilling three and Austin Anderson adding one for a 22-5 lead.
After leading 22-12 at the half, the Patriots got off to a good second half start when Connor Dale hit a three and nine of their next 10 points also came on three’s when Gage Westlund hit two straight and Dale added another for a 35-18 lead with 7:20 left.
Westlund had 10 points, Goerges added nine, Buell and Dale each had six, and Eric Elvrum had five.
“After not doing very well in our last game at Deer River, the boys bounced back and played well,” said Coach Alex Kunesh. “It was nice to be on the winning side again.”
The Pequot Lakes freshmen built a 26-9 halftime lead and went on to win by 42-16.
Michael Pluimer and Andy Voges each had 11 points, Erik Sandelin had 10, Casey Welch six and Ben Nelson and Jack Keiffer had two each.
“The guys played well and we built a big lead, so I was able to substitute guys in at five at a time,” said freshmen coach Bret Sergent.
