The Pine River-Backus boys’ basketball team has 11 letterwinners to build around as the Tigers seek improvement after finishing 2-25 overall last season.
“Bringing back the bulk of our team will go a long way in improving from last year,” said PR-B head coach Shaun Howard, whose squad was edged at Nevis 57-55 in the season opener on Friday, Nov. 22. “We’re also a little bigger than last year.”
Those returning letterwinners are Seniors Cole Larson, forward, Travon Pederson and Jesse Potz, guards, and Saul Sasse, center; junior guard TJ Lukanen and junior forward Henry Krecklau; and sophomore forwards Zach Struss and Zach Semmler, sophomore guards Hank Raph and Konrad Bueckers, and sophomore center Tony Pederson.
Bueckers scored a team-high 24 points in the opening season loss at Nevis.
Others who could contribute on varsity are Shane Sepin, Dakota Martin and Shane Fleming.
Last season, the Tigers finished 1-12 overall in the Northland Conference.
PR-B was then seeded ninth and upset No. 8 East Central 55-46 in the first round of the Subsection 5A playoffs. The Tigers then lost to top-seeded Barnum 73-29 in the subsection quarterfinals.
The Tigers are scheduled to compete in the Menahga Holiday tournament on Dec. 20-21.
Assistant coaches are Gene Hamilton, Trent Fisher and Mike Dinnel.
