The Pequot Lakes junior varsity and freshmen teams both defeated visiting Aitkin in the season opener on Friday, Nov. 22.
The junior varsity, with Alex Kunesh making his coaching debut, won 46-33 while the freshman team won going away 53-31 after leading 26-19 at intermission.
The Patriots’ led the freshman game 9-6 after a 3-point basket by Jackson Goerges, a pair of layups by Josh Buell and a layup by Gage Westlund. Buell later added a pair of baskets to give the host team a 19-15 lead at the half. In the second half, the Patriots’ Cam Boller hit a 3-point shot to make it 28-16. The Gobblers eventually cut the deficit to 29-25, but Westlund stole the ball twice for. Austin Anderson and Westland later each scored to make it 44-30, and put the game away.
Buell and Westlund both finished with 10 points while Connor Dale added seven and Goerges six for Pequot Lakes.
“The guys played well for the first game,” Kunesh said. “We did play some good defense, but we didn’t shoot our free throws real well.”
Casey Welsh and Jack Kieffer each scored 12 points to lead the Pequot Lakes freshman to a win. Ben Nelson and Hunter Clement each had six points, Andy Voges and Michael Pluimerwith had five, Kirk Johnson four and Erik Sandelin three.
