Junior Caitie Ryan of Pequot Lakes advanced to the Class A state meet after finishing 16th overall at the Section 8A meet on Friday, Oct. 25, in Bagley.
The top two teams plus the next eight individuals not on those teams advance to state at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
“Caitie (Ryan) ran a personal best, and I’m really impressed with her effort,” said Pequot Lakes’ coach Jon Dale said of Ryan, who finished in 16 minutes, 41 seconds. “Caitie has worked so hard, and is so determined. We will see how she does at state. You get in a competitive field, and you never know what will happen.”
Dale added that the Pequot Lakes boys’ and girls’ program has now qualified at least one runner to the state cross country meet in eighth of the past nine seasons.
Ryan’s teammate, Jackie Brine-Doyle, just missed qualifying for state as she placed 18th overall, and ninth among runners whose teams did not qualify for state.
“Katie (Ryan) grabbed the final (individual) state qualifying spot and Jackie missed it by one spot,” Dale said. “So I had mixed emotions after the race. I was thrilled for Caitie but felt bad for Jackie.”
The Pequot Lakes girls finished fifth overall while the boys were seventh. The Perham Yellowjackets swept the titles in both boys and girls competition. The top Patriot boy finisher was Reid Pierzinski, who was 26th.
“Reid only missed qualifying for state by five spots,” Dale said of the eighth-grade runner. “His future looks good. I also like our team’s future. We have most of our top runners back next year.”
Pine River-Backus’ top boy finisher was TJ Lukanen, who was 33rd, while the top Tiger finisher for the girls was Shayna Moore, who was 65th.
