After dropping the first game against visiting Swanville 25-22, the Pine River-Backus Tigers came roaring back to win the next three games 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 in non-conference action on Monday, Sept. 23.
The Tigers were ahead in the first game, but they slowly lost their lead and it was eventually tied 22-22, before the Bulldogs scored the final three points.
In the second game, the Tigers were ahead 20-18 when they got a five-point run, including a kill and a block for a kill by Howard, to win. In the third game the Tigers were ahead 16-15 when they went on a seven-point run, including two kills each by Howard and Porta, to lengthen their lead to 23-15. The Tigers won the game on a kill and an ace serve by Callie Tilbury.
The final game was tied 6-6 when the Tigers went on a four-point run, including a kill by Lily Wiemann and an ace by Porta, to take the lead, which they kept for the rest of the game to take the win.
“Our team has been so fun to watch this year as they are always smiling,” said PR-B coach Erica Norman. “We agreed that we are here because we love the game of volleyball. Being coach of a team that is constantly enjoying what they are doing makes my job something to look forward to every day.”
The Tigers, 8-5 overall, are scheduled to host Northome-Kelliher on Thursday, Sept. 26, and then play at Pillager at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.

On Thursday, Sept. 19, PR-B co-captains Megan Felthous and Journee Howard led the visiting Tigers to sweep the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers 25-18, 25-18, and 25-12. Felthous led with four ace serves and eight kills, and Howard led with 24 set assists and 10 digs.
“Our team chemistry is pretty unbeatable this year,” Felthous said. “Regardless of wins or losses, we can pick each other up. Each player has dramatically improved since the beginning of the season, which is always the ultimate goal. We’ve played a lot of hard teams and competed with each one.”
The first game the Tigers quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead with a five point run, followed by a six point run. The Tigers managed to stay ahead even though CL-B tried to work their way back. In the second game the score was tied 14-14 when the Tigers got two points, including an ace by Howard, that gave them the lead, and they kept the lead from then on.
The third game wasn’t very spectacular as CL-B started making mistakes, and the Tigers simply dominated the game. Megan Porta commented after the game, “I think our season has been a lot of fun so far. We have had about an equal amount of wins and losses but I personally think that all of that will change and we will pull ahead. As a team, we have become very close and we have all been having a blast playing together.”
