Pequot Lakes’ Sydney Holt was champion at No. 3 singles and Lauren Bengtson won at No. 4 singles as the Pequot Lakes Patriots won the Moose tennis tournament for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Brainerd High School.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Ellie Erholtz-Carly Fyle was also a champion while Pequot Lakes’ Erika Monson won at No. 3 doubles, playing two matches with Maggie Heggerston and two with Sarah Najjar.
“Winning this tournament will definitely be one of the highlights of the season for us,” said Pequot Lakes coach Monica Sergent. “Our goal was to get first, but when we actually achieved it, the feeling for the team was amazing. They all played some of their best tennis, in spite of the heat.”
Pequot Lakes’ Hailey Wiebolt was runner-up at No. 1 singles as was the Patriots’ No. 2 doubles team of Madison Galligan-Alex Nelson.
The Patriots, 10-2 overall, are scheduled to host Staples-Motley in a key Mid-State Conference match on Thursday, Sept. 12.
“The match with (S-M) is important for us because they are not only in our conference, but also our section,” Sergent said. “The outcome will affect seeding for post season tournament play.”

Sydney Holt moved up to No. 1 singles and still improved to 10-1 overall as Pequot Lakes swept non-conference foe Perham Yellowjackets on Thursday, Sept. 5.
“It is always fun to play at Perham because they have such a beautiful facility,” Sergent said. “We were able to mix our line up and give the girls some different challenges. This is a good time of the season to do this since it gives them a fresh perspective and keeps things interesting.”
