Junior TJ Lukanen leads a field of eight Pine River-Backus cross country letterwinners from last season.
Last fall, Lukanen finished 34th overall at the Section 8A meet.
Other letterwinners are junior Dallin Sonenstahl, sophomores Josh Sechser and Troy Fetter, freshmen Luke Downie and Evan Gravdahl, eighth-graders Luke Sechser and Zack Tulenchik.
“Our team will be led by Lukanen, who was (Birch Tree) all-conference honorable mention last year,” said PR-B coach Gregg Ehlert, who is starting his 14th season as boys’ coach. “We have a lot of young runners who are looking for varsity experience.”
Other runners are junior Lucas McCoy, sophomores Kyle Tschida and Jacob Riley, freshman Jordan Orth, eighth-graders Nick Ackerman and Peter Koering and seventh-grader Torry Hirschey.
Girls’ cross country
PR-B has a young girls’ cross country squad, but they do have a good number of participants.
“We’re excited to have 15 girls out for cross country,” said Tiger coach John Riewer. “We are extremely young, but look forward to having a lot of fun and improving throughout the year.”
Letterwinners include junior Jess Hanneken and Madison Welte. Other runners are juniors Liz Downie; sophomore Cheyenne Swenson; freshmen Rebecca Weber; eighth-grader Audrey Tulenchik, Laura Oates, Misato Marcum and Ashley Norlund; and seventh-graders Shayna Moore, Alexandra Hoopman, Emma Templeton, Lillain Derksen, Grace Rivers and Brooke Kilchesky.
Last year, PR-B finished 12th in the boys' competition and 15th in the girls at the Section 8A meet.
