Pequot Lakes High School tennis players Carly Fyle, a junior, and Haley Wiebolt, a sophomore, have a special connection beyond being teammates.

They are cousins. They also aren’t the only tennis players in their family.

At the Saturday, Aug. 17, tennis match, the Patriots played Lakeville South, a team that includes a third cousin — junior Jenna Sergent.

This was the first time the cousins played against each other competitively, though they have played together for fun.

Pequot Lakes tennis coach Monica Sergent is the girls’ aunt. All three girls cited family, their cousins and Sergent as motivating factors behind their decision to play tennis. Specifically, the girls look up to former Pequot Lakes tennis players Kayla and Megan Lenz.

“Both Kayla and Megan have their names on the 100 win boards in the big gym (which Fyle and Wiebolt would like to accomplish) and went on to play at St. Cloud State University,” Monica said.

Fyle and Jenna Sergent ended up playing each other in No. 1 doubles, where Fyle and her partner, Ellie Erholtz, defeated Jenna and her partner 6-4, 6-1.
