Top-seeded Grand Rapids scored six times in its last two at innings to defeat No. 2 Nisswa 8-2 for the Substate 10 Division I tournament championship on Sunday, July 28, in Grand Rapids. Nisswa finishes the season 14-11 overall.
Drew Sannes pitched the first six innings for Nisswa. He allowed four hits and three earned runs, walked two, struck out five and hit two batters. Logan McElfresh, Jamie Stall and Quinn McElfresh finished for Brainerd.
T.J. Graumann hit a solo home run in the Nisswa sixth while Conor Gessell and Logan Jones each had two singles for Nisswa, which did commit four errors.
Duluth Lakeview 1
Conor Gessell went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run to lead Nisswa past Duluth Lakeview 12-1 in the Substate 10 Division I loser’s bracket on Saturday, July 27.
Derek Knoll picked up the complete-game win. He walked four and allowed five hits with no earned runs. Graumann racked up three hits and scored three times while Logan McElfresh drove in four runs and Nate DeChaine notched a pair of RBIs for Nisswa.
Grand Rapids 16,
Drew Sannes and Beau Janousek doubled for second-seeded Nisswa as they fell to top-seeded Grand Rapids 16-8 in the winner’s bracket game of the Substate 10 Division 1 tournament on Friday, July 26. Nisswa did have a 14-13 edge in hits. Graumann was the losing pitcher.
Nisswa 8, Cloquet 7
Sannes’ run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth enabled Nisswa to edge Cloquet 8-7 earlier on Friday, July 26. Nisswa enjoyed a 19-9 edge in hits.
With two outs, Janousek doubled. Graumann was intentionally walked before Sannes lined a single to left-center to score Janousek. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Nisswa scored twice to tie it.
Cloquet went ahead 7-6 in the top of the eighth. Nisswa scored once in the bottom of the eighth to tie it.
Nate DeChaine finished 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead Nisswa at the plate. Dillon Solid drove in two runs and finished 2-5. Graumann was 3-5 with a double. Gessell and Logan Jones also doubled.
Nisswa finishes the season with an 11-7 record.
