The Pequot Lakes 14-under Blue girls’ fast-pitch softball team defeated St. Francis 6-5 in six innings, but lost to Big Lake 6-5 and Buffalo 7-0 at the double-elimination state tournament on Saturday, July 20, in Elk River.
In the opener, the game was tied 2-2 after five innings before St. Francis scored three times in the top of the sixth. Pequot Lakes rallied with four runs after two outs to win in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Faacks singled, Taya Salminen and Caitlyn Carkhuff each had an RBI singles, Meghan Nelson had an RBI triple, Shelby Edblad doubled home Nelson with the winning run. Taya Salminen was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, Pequot Lakes trailed by two runs in the fifth, but rallied to tie it and force an extra inning. Big Lake then won by one run in the sixth.
In the final game, Buffalo defeated Pequot Lakes to eliminate them from the tournament. Pequot Lakes ends with an 11-4 overall record.
