Megan Porta accomplished something that no other Pine River-Backus athlete has done for quite some time when the sophomore reached the podium after finishing fifth in the discus competition at the Class A state track and field meet on Friday, June 7, at Hamline University in St. Paul.

“I’m not sure when the last time it happened,” PR-B head coach Tom Demars said of Porta’s medal performance, “but Megan is pretty happy. She has only competed in discus for a year and a half, so she’s come a long way. She improved her throws by 15 feet from last year.”

Porta, who qualified for state with a toss of 114 feet, 6 inches to finish second at the Section 6A meet, turned in a similar throw of 114 feet, 2 inches at state. Nailah Hill, a senior from Breck School, won the title a 139 feet, 11 inches.

“Megan is a talented athlete who is also good at the high jump, but I would say discus is her best event,” Demars said. “She’s tall and strong, which is suitable for throwing the discus. She getting better, but there’s still room for improvement.”

Porta, who finished first in discus in the Tigers’ four meets during the regular season, is still a ways from equaling the long-time PR-B school record for discus held by Marie Sherwood.

“State was a great experience,” Porta said. “It was really exciting to be able to step up on the podium and receive a medal. I can’t wait for the track season to start next spring.”
