The Pequot Lakes Patriots were swept in Mid-State Conference doubleheaders against Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday, May 23, and against Perham on Wednesday, May 22.
The Patriots, 2-10 in the Mid-State Conference and 3-12 overall, were seeded sixth and scheduled to play at No. 3 Minnewaska in the first round of the West Subsection 6AA playoffs on Tuesday, May 28.
The May 28 winner advances to face the winner between No. 2 Little Falls and No. 7 Milaca in the subsection semifinals on Wednesday, May 29. Staples-Motley received the top seed in the West Subsection while St. Cloud Cathedral was the top seed in the East. The subsection finals are scheduled for June 3 and the section final on June 6.
Wadena-DC sweeps Patriots
Pequot Lakes was swept by the Wolverines 11-8 in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap on Thursday, May 23.
In the opener, the Patriots were outhit 14-7 as W-DC’s Jake Krause was 4-for-4. Gaven Bickford was 2-for-4 for Pequot Lakes. Matt Laughlin was the winning pitcher while Peter Kostecka took the loss.
In the second game, Krause had three hits while Aspen Florey and Hunter Leslie were each 2-for-4 for the Patriots. The Wolverines improved to 5-7 in the conference and 8-9 overall.
Perham sweeps Patriots
On May 22, the Yellowjackets swept Pequot Lakes by scores of 5-0 and 10-1 in a conference twinbill. In the opener, Jordan Redmond went the distance in taking the pitching loss. He allowed seven hits while striking out five. Leslie doubled among the five Pequot Lakes hits off winning pitcher Cameron Mulcahy.
Eric Brauch had a two-run homer as the visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
“We hit the ball well, but it was always right at somebody,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kyle Spray. “Jordan (Redmond) also pitched real well.”
In the nightcap, the Yellowjackets broke up a close game with five runs in the sixth inning.
Leslie was 2-for-3 while Austin Mesenbrink doubled. Perham enjoyed a 14-5 edge in hits. Austin Erickson was the winning pitcher while Jordan Thorson took the loss for the Patriots.
