The Pequot Lakes Patriots baseball team is on a three-game winning streak after starting the season 0-8 overall. Last week, the Patriots pounded out 30 hits and 40 runssweeping Crosby-Ironton 21-6 and 19-6 in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 14, and upset Aitkin 14-1 in non-conference play on Thursday, May 16.
The Patriots, 3-8 overall, will play a rescheduled home doubleheader against Perham on Wednesday, May 22, and then host Wadena-Deer Creek in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
Patriots sweep Rangers
In the opener, Hunter Leslie homered and tripled in his first two at bats and Aspen Florey was 4-for-5. Pequot Lakes outhit C-I 14-5 and committed just two errors while the Rangers had eight.
Peter Kostecka earned the pitching win while Ranger starter Jared Bundy took the loss.
“We played some pretty good baseball all season, but we haven’t been getting the big hits when we needed them,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kyle Spray, “but that changed today.”
In the nightcap, the Patriots outhit the Rangers 16-11 in a slugfest. Pequot Lakes also played better on defense as they committed two errors to eight by C-I.
Austin Mesenbrink was the winning pitcher while Ben Jordan took the loss. Florey added a run-scoring triple. Pequot Lakes improved to 2-6 in the Mid-State while C-I drops to 0-10 in the conference.
Patriots 14, Aitkin 1
On May 16, Pequot Lakes downed the Gobblers as Jordan Redmond pitched a complete game victory and Messenbrink was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.
Aitkin enjoyed an 8-7 edge in hits, but the Patriots played errorless ball.
“It was a great game,” said Redmond. “We went up by one run, but they tied it. We then got the lead back, and we were able to hold it.”
Spray added: “We played great defense against a real good team,” he said. “We got a couple of nice hits, and Jordan (Redmond) pitched a nice game.”
