The Pine River-Backus Tigers’ baseball team played their season opener against the Menahga Braves Monday, May 6, in Pine River, and suffered their first loss 14-3. Menahga was the first to score as they got a run in the top of the second inning. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third as Jared Adkins came home on a double by Nick Gravdahl.

The Tigers are scheduled to play a conference doubleheader at home against the Laporte Wildcats on Thursday, May 16, a non-conference game against the Northland Eagles in Northland on May 17, and a conference doubleheader at the Nevis Tigers on May 20.

Against Menahga, PR-B fell behind 2-1 in the top of the fourth, and then trailed 5-1 in the top of the fifth. The Tigers got Menahga out in three batters in the top of the sixth, and struggled hard in the top of the seventh as their pitching went downhill.

PR-B walked nine batters and allowed nine runs in the top of the seventh. They attempted a come-back in the bottom of the inning but they were only able to score two runs. The Tigers stranded 12 runners, had four errors to Menahga’s one, and were out hit 7-4.

In the first game the Wolves were the first to score as they got a run in the first inning. The Tigers scored one run in the second inning as Zach Struss got on base on a walk and worked his way around until he was able to steal home. The Wolves also scored in the second inning with two runs to make the score 1-3.

PR-B scored two runs in the third to tie it 3-3, and they scored three more runs in the fourth to take the lead 6-3. The Tigers just managed to hang onto the game as they held the Wolves to two runs in the seventh and made them strand one runner on second to end the game. Beau Howard was the winning pitcher as he struck out seven, walked five, and gave up four hits. Gravdahl and Adkins led the Tigers in batting as Gravdahl went 1-3 with two RBI and Adkins went 1-2 with two RBIs.

In the second game the Wolves were the first to score again as they got one run in the first inning. The Tigers scored four runs in the fourth as Rubner, Kangas, Anthony Phillipson, and Howard all scored. Three of them came home on a huge double by Jared Adkins with two outs. The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-1.

Once again the Tigers just managed to hold off the Wolves as they came roaring back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Phillipson took the win with seven strikeouts, four walks and seven hits. Adkins went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs, Gravdahl and Kangas both doubled.
