Alex Stone, a Pequot Lakes eighth-grader, finished 10th overall in the Super G alpine skiing event at the 14-under Regional Championships on Wednesday, March 13, at Winter Park, Colo.
The 13-year-old skier from Crosslake competed against 94 girls from across the 19 Midwest and Rocky Mountain states in the Super G race.
“Last year I fell in the Super G, and two years ago I was 17th,” Stone said. “We reach speeds of 50-60 miles per hour, so I’m pretty happy with my time of 59 seconds. The girl that won the Super G was from Buck Hill (in Burnsville).”
The Super G race is normally dominated by skiers from the Rocky Mountain states. Stone qualified for the Junior Championship earlier this season in Michigan.
“I also skied in the Giant Slalom and a Combo (combination) event at the regional,” said Stone, who is competing in the 14-U division for a final season.
Stone said the experience makes her a better high school skier for the Brainerd Warrior team.
“It gives you confidence,” said Stone, a two-time state qualifier with the Warriors. “It’s also extra time on the snow.”
