Patriots fall to Pelican Rapids

Jordan Redmond scored 26 points, but the visiting Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team fell to the Pelican Rapids Vikings 63-52 in non-conference action on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Patriots, 6-4 in the Mid-State Conference and 9-13 overall after their third straight loss, were schedule to play at Perham on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and then host Nevis on Friday, Feb. 22.

The game was a make-up date from Jan. 29, when it was postponed due to inclement weather.

Pequot Lakes edged the Rangers 52-51 earlier this season, but in a return engagement on Friday, Feb. 15, C-I pulled away in the late going to and rolled to a Mid-State Conference win over the visiting Patriots.

Caleb Baker tallied 20 points, nine assists and six steals for the Rangers, who have won 11 in a row and improve to 8-1 in the conference and 19-4 overall.

Brett Peterson led the Patriots with nine points while Jordan Redmond and Travis Jacobson each had eight.

C-I built a 15-8 lead early before the visitors rallied to cut the deficit to 17-15 after a 9-0 run sparked by a three-point play by Jack Krietz after a driving layup and the ensuing free throw. The game was eventually tied at 19-19, and then Brett Peterson answered Baker’s 3-point basket with a tre that gave the Patriots their final lead of the game. The next nine points went to C-I as it built a 35-27 lead at the half. Pequot Lakes then scored the first five points of the second half, but the Rangers went on a 28-2 run to dismantle the Patriots.

Pequot Lakes led the non-conference game 28-23 at the half only to be outscored in the second half as the Huskies’ EJ Ziegler had 22 points and had 14 rebounds on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The difference in the game came at the line where the Huskies were 24 of 31 while the Patriots made just four of eight chances.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well, and we made too many turnovers,” said Pequot Lakes coach Garry Grewe, “but the big difference was (Pillager) attempting 23 more free throws that we did.”

Redmond had 18 points to lead the Patriots while Kreitz added 10.
