The Staples-Motley Cardinals improved to 9-0 and clinched the Mid-State Conference title with a 76-57 win over the Pequot Lakes Patriots in girls’ basketball action on Thursday, Feb. 7.
The Patriots, 5-3 in the Mid-State and 13-8 overall, were scheduled to play Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and then host Grand Rapids on Thursday, Feb. 14.
Kelly Pearson had 20 points for the Cardinals, who are ranked No. 7 in the Class AA poll. Pequot Lakes had five players score in double figures, led by Kayla Miller’s 13 points.
The Patriots never led until midway through the opening half behind Pearson’s hot shooting as she scored the Cardinals first 16 points. Pequot Lakes battled back to tie it 16-16, and then took the lead on a pair of free throws by Kayla Miller. A few minutes later, S-M’s Mikayla Wing nailed a 3-point shot to give the visitors the lead they would never relinquish. The Patriots stayed fairly close as they trailed 35-29 at the half.
The Cardinals began to extend their lead early in the second half as Jasmine McGillvray nailed a pair of 3-point baskets. S-M extended the lead to 52-37, but the Patriots later cut the deficit to 56-45 after layups by Vanessa Lane and Miller.
The Cardinals built a 71-49 lead before Brittny Bzdok answered with three baskets for Pequot Lakes. But it wasn’t enough to close the gap as S-M won by 19 points.
“(S-M) is much deeper, and I think we became tired,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale, “but I can’t be disappointed with our effort.”
