The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team lost to Park Rapids 50-46 on Tuesday, Jan. 29, after trailing 32-21 at the break.
The Patriots snapped a 9-9 tie early on Hunter Larson’s 3-point basket. Pequot Lakes eventually led 14-13 on Jackson Goerges’ 14-foot shot. The Panthers rallied to lead by 11 at the half, and stretched the advantage to 35-21 early in the second half. The Patriots then went on an 11-0 run behind 3-point shots by Goerges and Davich.
Pequot Lakes did enjoy a brief 43-42 lead with three minutes remaining after a layup by Jack Kreitz, and a driving layup and free throw by C.J. Borleis.
The next five points went to the Panthers, but Borleis answered with a 3-point shot to cut the deficit to 47-46 with 52 seconds left. But Park Rapids made three of four free throws to clinch the win.
“We dug ourselves a big hole in the first half when we missed too many shots,” said Pequot Lakes coach Brian Lempola. “We made a nice comeback, but just fell short.”
Borleis led the Patriots with 15 points, Davich added 10, Kreitz nine, Goerges five, Erik Elverum four and Larson three.
The Pequot Lakes freshmen snapped a 17-17 halftime tie by outscoring Park Rapids 35-23 in the second half for a 52-40 victory.
Cody Huss finished with 19 points, Gage Westlund had 13, Josh Buell 10, Connor Dale and Hunter Goerges each had five. Scott Peterson had 23 to lead the Panthers.
“We played our best as a team in the second half tonight,” said Pequot Lakes freshmen coach Bret Sergent, whose big second half was sparked by Huss with 11 points.
