The Pequot Lakes freshmen boys' basketball team settled for fourth place at their four-team tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26.
In the first round, the Staples-Motley Cardinals edged the PR-B Tigers 39-38 while the Patriots lost to Bemidji 70-37. The first half was fairly even before the Lumberjacks hit a couple of three-pointers late to build a 31-22 cushion at the break.
In the second half the much-taller Lumberjacks outscored the Patriots 18-4 at the start to build a 49-31 lead.
Two Patriots hit double figures for the Pats with Josh Buell leading the way with 12 points and Gage Westlund with 10. Hunter Goerges and Jordan Oaks each chipped in with four apiece, Connor Dale hit a three-pointer and both Jack Harguth and Dylan Walberg each had two apiece.
In the third-place game the Patriots led the PR-B 22-16 at the half before the Tigers really pulled away the second half to win by 51-36.
The Tigers took a 4-0 lead at the start before the Patriots went on a 17-4 run, with Hunter Goerges scoring 15 of those points including three from behind the arc for a 17-8 lead and they went on to lead by six at the break.
In the second half the Tigers really came roaring back but Pequot Lakes still led by 29-27 after a layup and a free throw by Westlund but the Tigers went on a 14-2 run to completely take control of the game and they coasted to their 15-point win.
Goerges led the Pats with 19 points with three 3-pointers, Cody Huss had seven, Westlund five, Dale three and Buell two.
“We didn’t play our best basketball against either Bemidji or PR-B but both of those teams outsized us,” said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent.
Bemidji won the title game by outscoring Staples-Motley in a free-scoring contest by a 66-56 score.
